Viticulture Crop

Vignerons, as with all primary producers, are at the mercy of nature when striving for the balance between quality and quality come vintage time. Insurers have therefore developed insurance policies that will cover against damage from the major risks of fire, hail and frost that can occur in many vineyards.

Cover can be obtained for:

  • Loss of grape yield
  • Ancillary property (trellising / irrigation etc..)
  • Increased vineyard management costs Loss of future earnings
  • Grape transit cover.

Loss of grape yield:

Insurers provide several options, here are two of the most common.

Covered by a fixed, agreed value per hectare. You can nominate a value per hectare which reflects your expected income from grape production. Following a loss, the percentage of loss of yield is applied to the value per hectare that was agreed upon.

Adjustable Yield option. You can estimate your yields and nominate a value per tonne. Following a loss, the percentage loss of yield is applied to the lesser of the estimated yield OR the actual yields (as proven by submission of weigh notes after harvest).

Ancillary property:

Cover for items such as trellises, aboveground irrigation pipes and vine guards, against the same risks that you have insured your grapes.

Increased vineyard management costs:

You can insure against costs following an insured loss, or for the need to mitigate an insured loss, such as purchasing and replanting new grapevines, removal of debris, clean up, pruning, additional application of fungicides, fertilizer or insecticides and the associated labour costs.

Loss of future earnings:

A severe loss to your grapevines may necessitate replanting and may affect future productivity of your vines. You may therefore suffer a loss of profit in subsequent seasons. Cover is available at a nominated agreed value per hectare, when vines in all or part of the insured vineyard are destroyed or you suffer a 100% loss of grape yield.
