Farmers are the backbone of this great country

Born from a simple idea back in 1975, to now being a top insurance brokerage with offices across Australia and one in Asia, MGA Insurance’s story has been one of steady growth.

Much like a crop growing steadily through the year, or the gradual expansion of a family farming business, MGA’s rise has been fuelled by passion, determination and diversification.

As well as servicing rural clients’ needs, the SA-based insurer also covers everything from high-rise residential strata, to home insurance, to corporate aviation.

Fresh out on his own as a broker in 1975, John George saw a need.

To him, big insurers felt distant, almost impersonal. So he asked himself ‘what if there was a company that truly understood the local market, that offered a personal touch, and genuinely looked out for its clients?’

And that’s how MGA Insurance Group began – in a small office, fueled by ambition and a strong belief in community.

Mr George said the early days were a blur of hard work, long hours, countless phone calls, and building relationships one client at a time.

Every handshake and every policy written felt like laying another brick in MGA’s foundation.

The first two decades were marked by joint ventures and mergers.

The next three by steady growth. The 1990s saw ten new branches opened – Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay, Cummins, Booleroo Centre, Port Pirie, Naracoorte, Mount Gambier to name a few.

Another nine came to being in the 2000s and a further 18 from 2010 to 2020.

Even through great growth MGA has stayed true to its roots, displaying a commitment to personal service and local understanding.

A culture where staff and clients are family.

“50 years on, it’s humbling to see what MGA has become,” founder John George says.

“From that single office, we’ve grown into one of Australia’s largest privately-owned insurance broking groups.

“It wasn’t always easy, of course. The industry has seen its share of changes and challenges, but our core values have guided us through every storm.

“It’s been an incredible journey, built on the hard work of so many, and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
